Think it's about cost? Nope!
It's about output.
Who will output the most for the time I invest in them?
I think this is a fascinating change in how we look at "entry level workers" since there are now so many people who perviously were "boxed out" from getting a role at a new company.
This isn't a knock on college grads either, it's more a reflection of how much bigger and accessible the entry level pool is.
