About James

Bio

While many personal statements focus on a linear path of academic or corporate success, my journey is defined by the grit, resilience, and adaptability of a first-generation immigrant. Moving to the United States in the third grade following my father’s assignment with Hyundai Motor Company, my life took an unexpected turn when we decided to permanently settle here. We faced the raw, unvarnished realities of immigrant life—navigating cultural gaps, language barriers, and systemic complexities like healthcare. Through facing financial betrayal within our own community, falling down, and continuously rising again, our family evolved from struggling immigrants into resilient, deeply rooted members of the Korean-American community.

The most profound lessons in my life were those that money could not buy, centered around health and family. In 2017, our family was hit by a double crisis: my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, and my father’s insurance agency faced severe financial distress, forcing us to lay off all employees. I was carving out my own future within the corporate purchasing department at H Mart, with clear career goals and a team I loved. However, when my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and my father’s insurance agency faced a severe financial crisis, I knew what mattered most. I chose to let go of my secure corporate path and step into the fire to save my family’s business. My father and I had to restart from zero in a windowless basement office. My daily routine became a relentless cycle of survival: driving my sister to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and while she received treatment, pounding the pavement with 300 business cards a day to pitch group health insurance to local small business owners. Giving in to sorrow was a luxury I could not afford. Amid the crushing weight of monthly premiums, rent, and living expenses, I maintained a relentlessly positive mindset and pushed harder.

Our breakthrough came when our hard work caught the attention of Shinhan Bank America, a South Korean bank headquartered in Seoul, leading to a major corporate contract. From there, momentum shifted in our favor. With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates, health insurance demand surged. By building deep trust and maintaining an exhaustive work ethic through the COVID-19 pandemic—a time when many local agencies collapsed—we established an absolute monopoly on the corporate health insurance market for Korean enterprises across New York and New Jersey.

Just as we achieved financial stability, tragedy struck again when my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. Returning to the familiar halls of Memorial Sloan Kettering, we were told she had a 50/50 chance of surviving the surgery. This experience taught me that wealth cannot purchase health, and the only thing I could do was bring her joy by showing her my growth and success. Driven by the desire to see her smile, I embarked on grueling 980-mile one-way sales trips from Fort Lee, New Jersey, to Auburn, Alabama. Every signed contract was a gift I presented to my mother to give her strength. It was during one of these relentless journeys, while stopping in Washington D.C. to visit a friend, that I met my wife. We connected deeply over our shared values and life stories. Following my marriage, I relocated to Washington D.C. and immediately leveraged my industry expertise to secure a contract with The Korea Times. I continued to push geographic boundaries, driving down to Alabama and Savannah, Georgia, to pitch to Hyundai Motor Company and its tier-1 suppliers. I have always believed that honest labor never betrays you. A testament to this is my partnership with Ecoplastic in Statesboro, GA, which grew from managing 2 expatriates to overseeing a workforce of 600 employees under our insurance management.

Today, residing in Savannah, Georgia, I maintain a rigorous discipline—visiting corporate clients in Alabama and Savannah every three weeks, building relationships with CEOs, and securing organic referrals. Recently, my consistent dedication has earned me formal letters of recommendation from the HR departments of companies I manage, opening active, direct recruitment dialogues with the HR department at HMGMA (Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America).

I do not claim to possess extraordinary or rare technical skills. Instead, my greatest asset is the rare discipline of executing mundane, repetitive tasks with absolute sincerity and unwavering consistency every single day. My life has trained me to be comfortable in the storm, and I possess the absolute confidence that when the next great opportunity arrives, I am fully prepared to execute it flawlessly.
