Bio
James Cantwell is the founder of WealthTech Select and Ascent Growth Platforms, the company building RIA Ascent. He's spent 25+ years working between investment management and wealth technology, including running the North American consulting team at SS&C Advent and earlier roles at GAMCO and AST Trust Company (now part of Broadridge).
WealthTech Select helps RIAs, wealthtechs, and breakaway advisors figure out how to actually use AI and choose technology that fits their firm. Vendor-agnostic, operator-led, with fractional CTO services as part of the offering. RIA Ascent is the intelligence and matching platform connecting advisory firms with the vendors, partners, and acquirers best positioned to support their growth or eventual exit.
James co-hosts the AI for Advisors podcast and sits on numerous advisory boards spanning RIA aggregators, wealthtechs, and personal finance. A futurist on where wealth management tech should be heading, and a contrarian on most of what's being built today.

Product Creator
Position Description
Project Managers spend most of their time managing the applications that are supposed to help them, instead of managing the project. I built Groundskeeper to eliminate this issue...first for my firm...then for firms like ours. Groundskeeper is a project management platform built for advisory work — the consultants, fractional executives, and services firms who run client engagements with or without a dedicated PM. At its core is Willie is an AI project manager that reads the meetings, threads, and documents you hand her, drafts the plan, surfaces what changed, and prepares the updates your client sees through a built-in portal. You make the calls; Willie handles the synthesis and admin that usually falls through the cracks. I built it because the existing tools weren't built for this work. Asana, Monday, and ClickUp charge by the seat and assume an internal team needs to live in their platform, their revenue model depends on it — they punish you for inviting clients and leave the PM to manage data entry in a tool, taking away valuable time for actual doing the work. Groundskeeper does the project management itself, and prices flat per firm so adding the right people is the cheapest path to a healthy project, not the most expensive.
Accomplishment Notes
Designed and built a production multi-tenant SaaS platform with deeply integrated AI — Groundskeeper — after concluding that incumbent PM tools could neither serve the way services firms actually work nor price their product for it. The system ingests unstructured client material (transcripts, emails, decks, signed agreements), synthesizes it into a maintained project record with full source-level traceability, and is in production today with paying-tier-bound design partners. The work demonstrates the ability to take a multi-tenant, AI-native product from problem identification through architecture, build, and live customer use.
