Questions

I'm the founder of a mHealth start up based in Florida and am looking for a programmer with a vested interest in our product but can only offer equity. What are some of the best sites/platforms to find potential partners wanting equity?

When you approach a web developer, and propose they build your idea for free, with the promise to share in the profits later, you are communicating a few things.
1. You do not value the developer’s time.
2. You have no funding or budget.
3. You have not done due diligence to research the costs involved in launching a web-based business or digital product.
But most folks pitching equity-only compensation to a developer do not realize this. Many people believe originating the idea is the most important part. While finding a developer to work for sweat equity is an option, I’d assert that you’d be better served by hunting for a technical co-founder that is passionate about creating the company you envision. In my experience, it is naive to think you can just “get developers to build the product” although it does sometimes work. Most of the great software start-ups that I have been involved in have at least one technical co-founder. Regardless of the path you go down, you want to recruit quality. If you have no cash to offer someone, be prepared to give up a meaningful amount of equity. There is no easy formula that translates between hourly work and equity ownership, especially in a raw start-up, but be ready to have a thoughtful discussion with whomever you recruit. If you are not willing to go the technical co-founder route, the best place to search is at your nearest college with a strong computer science department, especially if it is a school with a culture of entrepreneurship.
